One of the ancient arts of China is calligraphic
writing.
Years of practice and training is needed to produce artistic writing
like this.
Drawn by Ali Cheung of Mansfield in Notts, these
two classic Chinese greetings, wish happiness and good luck.
The greeting at the left is Kung Hai Fat Choy in Cantonese or Gong
Xi Fa Cai in Mandarin, which means wishing you wealth and success
at New Year.
The calligraphy on the right means 'All families
filled with blessings when Spring comes'.
We also have calligraphic greetings from another
young artist in Nottinghamshire to celebrate the Year of the Goat.
The writing to your left is from Chen Chang, a
13-year-old from China who now lives in Nottingham and attends Bramcote
School.
Chen Chang's greeting reads Wan Shi Ru Yi and means 'May everything
be full of success'.
Finally we have the Chinese character Fu, which
means wealth, written in two different styles - by Ali Cheung on
the left and Chen Chang on the right.
You can see the very different styles as the 'fu' on the left is
done with a flourish and is very vibrant, while the 'fu' on the
right is done with a firm brush stoke and is more deliberate.
