Two men with a passion
for Nottingham, the 1980s and photography have managed to produce
a book that combines all three.

In 1978, in an age before digital TV, mobile phones
and the World Wide Web, two teenagers enrolled on an art course at
Clarendon College, Nottingham.
Thus began a lifelong friendship, as they embarked upon an adventure
that would bear witness to the rapid changes of a turbulent decade
- the 1980's.
Unlike their forefathers, miner's son Paul Fillingham and Chris Richards,
son of a Raleigh factory worker, were able to pursue creative ambitions
that would have been unthinkable to previous generations.

But Nottingham was changing, its traditional industries
in decline and when the Thatcher government came to power a new social
fabric was sown that would change the face of their provincial home
forever.
These changes, recorded for posterity in countless of photographs
and notebooks, form the basis of 'Nottingham in the 1980s'.
The 1980s seem like a long time ago, in fact,
a whole generation has grown up since the authors recorded this
city on film.
"About a year ago we thought that the time was right to revisit
the 1980s" says Paul, "you see alot of groups like Soft
Cell and Duran Duran reforming and it makes you wonder whether this
is just the tip of a full-scale eighties revival?"
Even if this is true, and the haircuts and fashions do come back,
Chris says that he'll "skip the pixie boots and shoulder pads
this time round".
Take a look at a sample of the 200 photos that will be appearing in the book >>
The book is published by Tempus Publishing and is due out in
November. For more information visit the official Nottingham
in the 1980s website.
