Playhouse break new ground with this production. It's the first
time they have created a play specifically to tour small scale venues.
The idea is to give audiences the chance to see Playhouse work on
their doorstep.
The story itself
concerns Jean. She's determined to end her days in the only place
she's ever called home. Unfortuately, that home is about to be blown
up.
Narshi is a
boy working for his uncle's demolition company. He's determined
to get her out safely.
The two meet
and Jean shares the story of her past life in the Jamaica House
tower block. An uneasy friendship develops bt as the clock ticks
down a battle of wills develops which both are determined to win.
The writer of
Jamaica House, Paul Sirett, researched his tale by talking
to residents who'd experienced the trauma of moving home because
of innercity redevelopment in the 1980's.
Jean is played
by Anne Orwin, who played foster mum Lou in the BBC children's television
programme Byker Grove.
The role of
Narshi is taken by Sanjay Sharma who has appeared on television
in Grange Hill and The Vicar of Dibley.
