An exhibition of new collaborative art work by ten artists from Nottingham and its European twin cities of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Ghent (Belgium), Karlsruhe (Germany) and Minsk (Belarus) is to open in Nottingham.

The artwork will be the outcome a two week residency in Nottingham, during which the artists will work together, exploring ideas of place and the city to create some new art.

------

Elaine Speight, one of three Nottingham Trent fine art graduates who has set up YOlk, explains all...
YOlk aims to establish and strengthen creative links between Nottingham and its twin cities, enabling a greater opportunity for exchange for all sections of the community. That's what the residency is all about.

As the work will be made during the residency, it's difficult to say exactly what it will be.

However, I think that there may be quite a few pieces made either by individual artists working alone or by more than one person.

However, the work will be inherently collaborative as it will be a direct response to discussion between all of the artists at the beginning of the residency (which will carry on throughout).

The work may be determined by the main medium which each artist works in, for example the artists from Slovenia work mostly in video, the artist from Ghent is a sound artist and myself and the others from Nottingham are into live art and performance. Though, of course these may all cross over within different pieces of work.

------

The work will be displayed in an exhibition at the Malt Cross, St. James' Street, in Nottingham. During the exhibition YOlk will run workshops where community groups can explore ideas of place, culture and communication in a creative way. For more information visit www.yolkart.org.
