Introducing... Max Cooper

Named a 'future hero' by dance magazine MixMag, Max Cooper is resident DJ for Nottingham clubnight Firefly at the Marcus Garvey Ballroom.

"Marcus Garvey [in Lenton] isn't just a good venue, it's one of the best I know. Anywhere. It's just got that raw basics thing, with a bit of spectacularism thrown in!"

Max has been a resident at Firefly, a clubnight that describes itself as 'the last proper rave in the UK' for eight years.

11 years a DJ

Recently he has been working on his third EP for Traum, an EP for VeryVeryWrongIndeed and has also remixed band Au Revoir Simone.

"It's very different working with all live parts rather than electronic remixes, it can be quite rhythmically challenging!"

Max has performed with many acts including Hot Chip, Justice and Digitalism but prefers to listen to classic and relaxed acts such as Jon Hopkins, Max Richter and Apparat.

When it comes to getting everyone on the dance floor in Nottingham, Max says Symphonica, from his last Traum EP, 'always does the job' but adds:

"Sometimes an unsuspecting track can completely smash it, when a "huge" track can fall on it's face."

Educated in Notts

Max originally moved to Nottingham as a student, to complete his Genetics degree, Masters and PHd at the University of Nottingham.

Over his 11 year DJing career he's also held residencies in Belfast and London, as well as Nottingham's Stealth. He believes the city's music scene is thriving.

"There are lots of good promotions and events going on in Nottingham, but not so many that the friendliness gets lost."

You can catch artists like Max Cooper on The Beat. The Beat is BBC Radio Nottingham's official Introducing show. You can listen to The Beat every Saturday night from 6.00pm until 10.00pm (103.8, 95.5fm, 1584am and DAB digital radio). If you miss it you can listen again on the BBC's iPlayer.
