Simon was born in Poland in 1938. He was just a toddler at the start of World War Two. As a Jew he knew persecution from an early age. During the war he lost both friends and family. When the Germans invaded Poland he fled his home in Radzivillov and went into hiding. Soon after the end of the war his father put him and his brother on a boat to England.
