Simon Winston at the Holocaust Centre, Nottingham

A place to remember

Born and raised as a Jew in Poland, Simon Winston tells us what the Holocaust Centre means to him.

Simon was born in Poland in 1938.

He was just a toddler at the start of World War Two. As a Jew he knew persecution from an early age.

During the war he lost both friends and family.

When the Germans invaded Poland he fled his home in Radzivillov and went into hiding. Soon after the end of the war his father put him and his brother on a boat to England.

Memories

For years he didn't tell anyone about his history. Then, one day, he came across an advert in a local newspaper about a Holocaust museum in Laxton, Nottinghamshire, close to his home.

"I'd never heard of such a thing.

"There weren't any holocaust memorial centres as far as I knew."

In fact the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre is the only one of its kind in England.

"I popped over and what I saw was amazing."

A voice

He has been lecturing at the Holocaust Centre for the last 13 years.

"The place is so precious. It is irreplaceable."
