In Search of the Holy Spirit

Healing, prophesy and speaking in tongues - it all happens in Nottinghamshire.

For Christians, Easter is a celebration of one of the most amazing and miraculous events in history.

But many Christians also believe God is still performing signs and wonders today, gifts of the Holy Spirit as mentioned in the Bible, Corinthians' 12:8-13.

These spiritual gifts include wisdom, knowledge, discernment, faith, healings, miracles, diverse tongues and interpretation.

Pauline Thomas is one of the church leaders at St Marks, an Anglican Church in Woodthorpe. She is part of a team who pray for people on Mapperley Top.

"I've seen God heal all sorts of things. I've seen him heal backs, I've seen him heal a lady who was deaf, I've seen a heart condition healed..."

Trent Vineyard is the largest church in Nottinghamshire, with a congregation of around 1700 people. Debbie Wright is the Co-Senior Pastor with her husband John. They believe in the power of the Holy Spirit and use a number of gifts, including words of knowledge and prophecy.

"We have a fuzzy filter. We don't always hear what He is saying and we need to hear it in lots of different ways."

Corinthians' 12:8-13

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Pastor Bisi of Gods Vineyard, a fast growing Pentecostal Church on Derby Road in Nottingham, speaks in tongues.

"It's a supernatural gift. When you are praying the spirit of God comes upon you you just begin to pray in the Holy Ghost."

Annie Bell is a mentor for the Aspire Mentoring Project and helps out at a soup kitchen run by Christians in Nottingham. She believes she has the gift of mercy.

"It is supernatural. I'm not saying that I'm superwoman. It's God within you that gives you that grace, that mercy to deliver in areas where you wouldn't normally be able to."

Reverend Richard Ian Turnbull is the minister of the Beeston United Reformed church. With his wife Elizabeth, they believe they have the gift of discernment and can help people through prayer, even getting rid of bad spirits. Elizabeth understands that this is a difficult area for a lot of people.

"It is very controversial, even for many Christians."
