BBC Radio Nottingham gardener John Stirland

John Stirland

John has been with BBC Radio Nottingham for over 30 years, answering his first gardening question with Dennis McCarthy.

He estimates that he has answered around 40,000 questions over the years.

And along with fellow gardener Martin Fish, he has won the 'Best Phone In' award at the Garden Writers Guild.

John was born 'just after the war' at Villa Farm in Nuthall, Nottinghamshire when it was just a village.

He blames his love of manure and garden compost on his star sign - he's a Taurus.

John admits to an eclectic jukebox at home mixing AC/DC with Clannad with a hint of Classical.

If he was into 'new-fangled technology' he'd currently have Carmina on his MP3 player.

Martin and John can be heard answering your questions every Thursday on BBC Radio Nottingham with Frances Finn (09:00 - 12:00) and co-presenting the Gardening Hour every Sunday (09:00 - 10:00). They are also BBC East Midlands Today's gardeners.
