Jane Doe and her first passport

Jane Doe with her first passport

Who am I?

Jane is an 85 year old woman who doesn't know who she is.

Jane, from Newstead, grew up believing she was Barbara Hall.

However, when attempting to get married in 1945 she ran into difficulties. She didn't have a birth certificate.

She took her dad to the Nottingham registrar to explain, and after 30 minutes of conversation behind a closed door the registrar said the wedding could go ahead. Jane never found out what was said.

Her marriage went ahead but over time Jane began to question why she had no birth certificate or any other form of legal identification.

Before the death of her parents she never managed to get a satisfactory answer.

A search for identity

Jane met her partner Clem in the 1960s.

Together they have spent four decades trying to discover who she is.

Aged 83, and after a long struggle, Jane finally received a passport, registered in the name of Jane Doe.

"It was a wonderful feeling, to know that they had made me somebody."

Jane's story has inspired Clem to write a book about her life.
