Lt. Affan Burki

Lt. Affan Burki

Islam and the army

Lieutenant Affan Burki is one of just 245 Muslim officers serving in the British Army.

Lieutenant Affan Burki, who is stationed at Chilwell Barracks, Beeston, is part of a British Army campaign to raise awareness of how black and Asian soldiers have made a significant contribution to the armed forces.

He works in communications. Affan says the army actively facilitate his spiritual needs.

"Muslims will practice their religion as far as their professional life will allow them to do so.

"The army actually encourages me, more than a civilian employer might do, to practice my faith. Each soldier is encouraged to pursue their spiritual side."

"We have a duty and obligation to do something for our country and we're British beyond anything."

With so many world conflicts affecting Muslims, Lieutenant Affan is in no doubt where his loyalties lie:

"We have a duty and obligation to do something for our country and we're British beyond anything."

Changing perceptions

Lieutenant Affan trained at Sandhurst. He says there he helped change people's views of Muslims.

"Most people who attend Sandhurst have never actually met a real live Muslim. The only perception they had of Islam was terrorism.

"It's nice to be able to change perceptions by virtue of example."

Lieutenant Affan attended Sandhurst at the same time as Prince Harry. What does he think of him?

"He's fantastic, absolutely great bloke. We do pretty much the same job."
