Sunday 28 September 2008 marked the 300th anniversary of the Sikh holy scriptures and 46,000 Sikhs gathered in a field in South Nottinghamshire to celebrate. This was the largest celebration outside India. 11th GuruFor sikhs, their holy scriptures are treated as a living guru, the 11th Guru Granth Sahib, and held in the highest honour. ![]() BBC Radio Nottingham's Sarah Julian went to the Bab Bhudagi guwdwara (temple) in Hyson Green to learn more about Guru Granth Sahib from the president Pritpal Singh Landa. Help playing audio/video Sarabjit Singh Landa organised the event. "We started out this project as a local gathering for Nottingham, Derby and Leicester and it very quickly took on a national scale. "We had requests coming in from all over the UK. Nine weeks later and we've got a huge venue set up." CelebrationThe day started with early prayers at 5:00 and included the reading of the scriptures, hymn singing, martial arts and free food for everyone. "It's an integral part of the Sikh religion where we have a free kitchen that is open to everybody and anybody. It is our way for saying thanks to God for giving us a wonderful religion and the humanity that goes with it."
