Ben Hyland on set

Frontman's Front Man

Former Rushcliffe School student, Ben Hyland, has always loved film so it's no surprise that it's taken him just nine months to go from creating a three minute short to his first full length movie.

'Frontman' is a comedy about Stanley and The Knives, a bunch of school friends whose only focus in life is music. When the lead singer dies he leaves his band mates £10,000 if they promise to reform 25 years later.

Now in the post-production stage, Ben is faced with editing some 57 hours of film, shot entirely in and around Nottingham, down to just 90 minutes.

"It's a luxury to have too much rather than too little."

Ben says his enthusiasm for film came at a young age.

"It was a big passion going to see films and I remember being amazed and always wanting to create things myself."

Writers Block

Despite a yearning to write, Ben didn't always find it easy.

"I certainly wrote things when I was younger and I look back on it and it was painful and rubbish and you cringe at it."

So, it was chance or fate when Edwalton raised Ben was at a London cinema when a trailer for a 24 hour film competition right here in Nottingham flashed across the screen.

Beatbox Kid

Ben went on to create The Beatbox Kid, a three minute film about a boy who could only communicate by beatboxing. He worked alongside his twin sister Becky, scooping second prize and getting that all important exposure plus thousands of hits on the internet.

Fuelling his enthusiasm for film making Ben's next film came around very quickly, making a music video for locals 'The Joe Strange Band' whom he met at his dad's 60th Birthday party.

Lead singer Joe was so impressed with The Beatbox Kid that he then offered to write the soundtrack for Frontman.

"The majority of the music he brought back was bang on."

Ben's hoping to secure a distribution deal for the film in 2009.
