Your storiesYou are in: Nottingham > People > Your stories > My Notts - Mark Glover ![]() My Notts - Mark GloverNetherfield Lagoons is a hidden part of Nottinghamshire that Mark wants more people to visit. Until the mid 1990s Netherfield Lagoons was only famous for being the area where waste from Gedling colliery was pumped. It was the dumping ground where the mine waste, from a couple of miles away, could settle. There's still evidence of those years of mining but the look of the site has changed dramatically. Back to natureThat's because the 50 plus hectares has been transformed into a nature reserve, boasting fresh water ponds, trees, plants and wildlife. ![]() View over Netherfield Lagoons "It's one of the jewels in the crown of Nottinghamshire," says Mark Glover, a trustee of the Gedling Conservation Trust, a charity that took on the ownership and management of the Netherfield Lagoons in 2005. "It's certainly one of the best places to come and watch and appreciate wildlife." Hopes and dreamsThe site is already encouraging species to the area. Orchids are a familiar feature, reed beds are persuading the bittern to the site and the hope is that otters will one day be tempted there. ![]() Geese fly over Netherfield lagoons "We want to make it available for schools and educational facilities and encourage kids to come along and learn more about nature and wildlife," says Mark. . .
