Jesus in BBC drama The Passion

The Passion and me

People of faith from Nottinghamshire tell us what The Passion means to them.

The Passion is understood by Christians to describe the suffering of Jesus, in the days leading up to his arrest, trial, and execution on a Cross.  But, of course, the Easter story isn't complete without the Resurrection three days later, which is the central foundation of the Christian faith.

I try and imagine what it must have been like for Jesus during the time of passion. What must it have been like to see a crowd cheer for you one week then want you dead the next.

To be betrayed by a close friend who you thought you could trust. To know that the leaders of your religion are plotting to kill you and that the government are going to stand back and let it all happen. Your closest friend will deny that he even knows you and all your closest friends and family will hide away scared and helpless. To suffer in the most horrific and brutal way possible, hour after hour of pain and torture, till you welcome death so that the pain will stop.

The fact that Jesus went through all this is amazing, but the fact he did it all willingly, knowing it was necessary is even more incredible. Yet greater still Jesus did all this for me, to take my place, to suffer so that I won't have to. This is the most amazing, astounding and awesome moment in history!

When people say that The Passion is the greatest story ever told it is so true for me. In this time of blockbuster movies The Passion has everything that a good story needs - adventure, love, bravery, fear, obsession, blood and death - plus the ultimate happy ending!

For a Christian like me, The Passion is also the heartbreaking story of the brutal treatment of a loved one at the hands of those who branded him a liar and his miraculous resurrection.

This story makes me weep and rejoice in equal measure, the cornerstone of my faith and that of millions of people the world over. It is all the more astonishing because it is not fiction but history - and what a leading man!

The Passion totally changed my life for good 12 years ago as a serving Notts Police officer. When I realised what had been suffered for me personally on the cross, I discovered my calling in life which was to try and help those with drug and alcohol addictions. Those very people that I was locking up I now care for with a passion that could only be God given.Happy EasterLawson Main
