Harry's American A-Z

Harry Keeling from Gamston took a trip to America - and visited every state in alphabetical order.

In 2007 Harry Keeling was 55 and bored.

He'd lived and worked all his life in Nottingham, trying his hand at many different trades (management, merchandising, computer programming, bus, taxi and van driving) but nothing seemed to quite hit the spot.

Harry discovered one thing from his string of jobs - the ones he enjoyed doing most were the ones behind the wheel - Harry liked the freedom of the open road.

Birthday present

On his birthday in 2006 he decided that it was time to take the year out that he never had in his teens.

He decided to set himself a task... to travel to every state in the USA in alphabetical order, starting and finishing in Washington DC.

Just to make it more fun he planned to visit the Capitol Building of each state.

On the road

Harry set off on his journey at the beginning of September 2007 and finished finsihed some six months later.

You can relive Harry's journey across the States by listening to the interviews he did on John Holmes' Afternoon Show on BBC Radio Nottingham.
