MusicYou are in: Nottingham > Entertainment > Music > Unsigned: Girlfixer ![]() Girlfixer Unsigned: GirlfixerInterview with Blast reporter Laura Johnstone Girlfixer offer up no nonsense in-your-face punk. Drummer Nicola tells us why we should love this punk band. **STOP PRESS**Girlfixer won the 2007 Battle of the Bands contest. Read more... Where is your band based?Nottingham. Who are your influences?Between the four of us we have quite a wide range of influences including grunge, metal, rock, and punk. Bands like The Distillers, The Bronx, Queens of the Stone Age, Vice Squad, Killswitch Engage... the list goes on! We sound a bit like...One review of our demo summed us up as: "No nonsense in-your-face passionately delivered punk at it's very best... traditionally played punk with a modern twist." Who would be your dream band member and why?I'm sure we all have an answer for that but to avoid insulting current members I think I'll skip that one! How did the band get together?Lance (bassist) had the idea to start a punk rock band with me on drums, so we asked two of our friends to join. We initially planned to play covers for fun, but we started writing our own material and loved the vibe so we carried on with it. Who are the most influential figures in your life? Our friends and family have been influential to us, they've encouraged us and continued to support us. We also take influence from other musicians that we look up to and have respect for... people who stand up for what they believe in and do things their own way. What would you give up to get signed? We'd give up everything within reason to be able to play music for a living. It's our dream, so whatever it takes. What are you listening to at the moment?I'm going through a Reel Big Fish ska phase at the moment! It's just feel good music that always puts me in a good mood. Ma and Lance have also been listening to The Bronx a lot, just because they are one of the greatest bands ever! Antony is mainly listening to Killswitch Engage, Alkaline Trio, and CKY. Nat has been listening to Vice Squad, Leftover Crack, and Exploited... amongst many other punk bands. In a fire which album would you rescue?I would rescue 'Sing Sing Death House' by The Distillers, it's a punk rock masterpiece. Antony would save 'Infiltrate, Destroy, rebuild' by CKY. Lance said 'Blast Tyrant' by Clutch, and Natalie would rescue 'Never Again' by Discharge. Does Nottingham offer you enough opportunities? There are a lot of promoters and good enough bands around, but if you don't promote your ass off constantly for weeks before your gig it's hard to pull a crowd unless your well known. Some venues like Junktion 7 offer the chance to apply for support slots for well known bands so that's a good opportunity. Things like Battle of the Bands are a good way for bands to get exposed too. Best band in Nottingham and why?Not sure if they are based in Nottingham, but I would say 'Yes My Ninjas?' because they're crazy! Great fun to watch and totally original. Nat's best Nottingham band is The Varukers because they're down to earth and they're an awesome punk band. What's the perfect night out in Nottingham?I'll answer for myself, but everyone else isn't far off! The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites The Old Angel for a warm up, Pit and Pendulum for cocktail pitchers, Foremans for good old punk tunes, Speak Easy for shots and cheap drinks, and then end up in Rock City to dance like morons! Possibly a detour to the casino in there somewhere, and ending the night with a trip to Subway obviously. last updated: 23/09/2008 at 13:14 You are in: Nottingham > Entertainment > Music > Unsigned: Girlfixer Venue websites
