Neil Warnock

Warnock's County memories

Neil Warnock guided Notts County to successive promotions in the early nineties, taking Notts to Wembley for the first time.

Neil Warnock is a controversial, and often unpopular, figure in football. However, at Meadow Lane he's a hero.

After John Barnwell was sacked in 1989, Chairman Derek Pavis took a punt on a young Neil Warnock, who was managing Scarborough in Division Four.

Warnock assembled a squad of players that fans still talk about today, great players like Mark Draper, Tommy Johnson, Phil Turner, Charlie Palmer and Steve Cherry.

"It was great to have that success and put a smile on [the Notts County fan's] faces..."

The team achieved successive promotions and ended up playing First Division football with Forest, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.

"It was great to have that success and put a smile on [the Notts County fan's] faces..." Says Warnock.

The former Sheffield United boss believes the team's success was down to how well the team got on.

"What I liked about the squad was if we were all in a room you wouldn't see two in a corner, three over there, you would see everybody talking to everybody else."

Warnock also guided Notts to an FA Cup quarter-final place after beating Manchester City in the fifth round.

The team lost 2-1 after taking the lead, Paul Gasgoine got the winner.

Despite success since leaving Meadow Lane in 1993, Warnock still looks back on his time at the club fondly. However, he believes a tribute should have been in order:

"My only disappointment was that they never named a stand after me! I generated all the money!"

Listen to our interview and find out what Neil Warnock and Derek Pavis fell out over; Neil's relationship with Brian Clough and his legendary 'training session' on sledges at Wollaton Hall.
