The Mystery Clocks - Panos and Adrian

The Mystery Clocks

The Mystery Clocks recently played an impromptu midnight gig in the Old Market Square.

Who are your influences?

The Beatles, Oasis, The Jam, The Stone Roses, The Verve, Neil Young, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Supergrass, The La's, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Beach Boys, The Clash and Radiohead.

Who would be a dream band member and why?

Ringo Starr, he would add more than we actually need. Anyone who can pull off that moustache circa 1967 deserves credit.

Does the city offer you enough opportunities?

Sometimes I don't think the music scene is big enough in terms of options, you've got a few small bars and a few massive venues. There's plenty to do but maybe not every night of the week. There's more than enough potential venues but someone needs to get them converted to offer decent size alternatives.

What was your best gig and why?

The guerilla gig we did at midnight in Old Market Square recently. About 20 French students were dancing along for a good hour and we also managed to secure a gig for ourselves in a bar in Paris over the summer. I think we've nearly cornered our European market already.

We've done a couple now, between the lions and under the odd marquee... to be honest the Police have never batted an eyelid and seem like they want to encourage new uses for the new market square - it's the flourescent jackets that have given us grief. We definitely plan to keep doing them, after people have worked out that we're not busking they seem to get into it, although if anyone fancies offering money then only notes will do!

What would you give up to get signed?

Apart from our jobs, nothing!

How did the band get together?

Through meeting at university but the actual formation only came about after a chance social visit. Ad says: We met up round my flat and went over a couple of songs that Panos had worked on and I quickly realised that I needed to write some better material. That's easily the best thing about having two writers in the same band, bouncing off each other. You know that the newest song is not always going to be introduced into the set because, in our opinion at least, we have to get something from it before we expand it.

Best band in Notts and why?

Mint.Ive. They're really pushing the Notts music scene and have done some amazing things recently, like supporting the Maccabees and what not. They're a supportive band, wanting to give advice etc... plus they're top lads. Gren Bartley too, as he is quite easily the best solo acoustic musician we've seen play in this city!

What are you listening to at the moment?

The Good The Bad and The Queen. New mainstream guitar music is poor at the moment so anything that doesn't sound like Bloc Party. Matthew Jay as always, big shame that.

In a fire, which album would you rescue?

Definitely Maybe by Oasis. The La's by The La's, you can always borrow a Beatles album off someone else.

What's the perfect night-out in Nottingham?

Ten pints in West Bridgford followed by a curry at Bombay on the way home.
