Saving Planet Earth

Green campaigner Karina Wells

Sharing a green passion

Karina believes there's no better way to live than the green way and wants others to join in too.

Karina Wells is getting stuck into Green Weeks by organising an event in West Bridgford.

"There's lots of activities lined up," she says.

"Basically the idea behind these are that they are a alternative to usual way of doing things, in a more caring way for the community and the environment. The whole point is to show we care for the community and give something back to the community".

Why Go Green?

Karina believes it's important to be green minded because "it shows you care so other people after you have clean water and fresh air to breathe. If you don't care life will be a sad place in the future".

Sharing and Caring

This isn't Karina's only venture into the world of environmental issues, she also set up some shared gardens.

The shared gardens are where local families come together to learn about growing their own fruit and vegetables. In the beginning Karina guided them on how to do it but now they are growing fruit and vegetables themselves with each person responsible for an area. They share the produce.

"It's satisfying to see people go away with their bag of produce".

Eco Teams

Not content with all these green efforts, Karina is also involved with Eco Teams, which are a group of households who meet over a few months.

As an Eco Team, they discuss ways to reduce their use of electricity, gas and water as well decrease the amount of rubbish they throw away.

"It creates an awareness. Over time the people in the eco teams changed, they found after two years they were still improving on their actions".

Being from Holland, Karina thinks they might be more advanced in some ways environmentally.

"Their government has more power when it comes to environmental issues but I don't think there's a huge difference between the countries when it comes to green matters".

"There's nothing better than a green way of living to show that you care".
