Sat Bains in Great British Menu

Sat Bains and the Great British Menu

Nottingham's Sat Bains is competing against some of the nation's top chefs to win the chance to cook at a four-course banquet hosted by the British ambassador to France. He's now reached the final.

Sat Bains, Nottinghamshire's only Michelin-starred chef and patron of Restaurant Sat Bains on the banks of the River Trent, is representing Nottinghamshire in the BBC Two Series 'the Great British Menu 2007'.

The challenge facing Sat and the other chefs is to convince the French that we can match them when it comes to gastronomic prowess.

Sat in the final

Sat has won the judges' vote over Galton Blackiston from Norfolk to represent the Midlands and the East of England in the competition.

Each day for a week the two chefs were judged on their recipe and at the end of the week Sat's menu was the one chosen to go through to the national final, vying for a place on the Great British Menu 2007.

Here is Sat's menu.

"I've turned a lot of TV down because, obviously as a chef, first and foremost you have to stay in the kitchen. But the programme itself is something that is very respected in the industry, and it's cooking, and it's cooking our food."

"I thought it's only a showcase. It's good to get a guy from Nottingham representing our region and it's something I'm very proud of."

The producer of the Great British Menu, Nicola Moody, says the winning chefs will be flying the flag for Britain.

"If there's one nation who has derided our efforts of British cuisine for decades it is the French. The chefs are fighting for their country. The French are extremely knowledgeable about their food and will be fierce critics. The challenge is huge - this is the big one for Britain."

To find out how Sat does in the national final you'll have to follow the programme. You can see Sat in the Great British Menu 2007 on BBC Two from Monday 21 to Friday 25 May 2007.
