In recent years Simon has become more interested in using wood.

In the beginning, to make his life-sized figures he was using an axe, a mallet and a chisel but it was taking him too long; that was when he bought a chainsaw. Simon says,

"Working with a chainsaw gives me quick results, I like the marks that I make with it.

"Also on a shallow note, the chainsaw is loud, there's a element of danger to it... I get a lot of satisfaction out of ripping big chunks out of the wood with my chainsaw!"

Simon's work is inspired by primitive art as well as everyday emotional experiences.

He often works on a large scale, as in his series of figures, 'The Playground of Life'.

Simon's works can be seen at a new exhibition at Rufford Craft Centre which runs until October this year.

This exhibition features over 20 examples of his figures in the Orangery and Apsidal Gallery at Rufford.
