The site is near to the village of Rainworth. However, the issue of what we do with waste which can't be recycled, or composted, affects us all. ListenRepresentatives from PAIN (People Against Incineration), Veolia, Nottinghamshire County Council and Paddy Tipping MP were on the panel discussing the possible incinerator at the Joseph Whitaker Sports College, Rainworth on Wednesday 21 March 2007. Questions were asked about the health implications for the village, what the contents of the incinerator would be and why this site was chosen. Groundswell av 210307Help playing audio/video More about the plansAn energy recovery facility (incinerator) uses the rubbish that is unsuitable for recycling and composting to make heat and power. ![]() Having a say Rubbish is fed into a furnace and burnt under highly controlled conditions. By 2012 the facility should be treating around 180,000 tonnes per year of waste. This would be about 35% of the waste produced in Nottinghamshire, generating enough electricity for the National Grid to power about 15,000 homes. Veolia Environmental Services will be working with Nottinghamshire County Council over the next 26 years to implement their Integrated Waste Contract. As part of the partnership to manage Nottinghamshire's waste Veolia plan to build an energy recovery facility on the old Rufford colliery site near Rainworth. ![]() Speaking out The protestorsLocal campaign group, PAIN (People Against Incineration) oppose the facility on several points. PAIN are concerned about health implications, property prices going down, environmental concerns and the impact the facility could have on surrounding wildlife. They are also worried about the effect the incinerator could have on drinking water and the possibility of contamination. last updated: 23/09/2008 at 12:07 You are in: Nottingham > Places > Places features > A burning issue in Rainworth
