Events taking place in Nottingham to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Abolition of Slave Trade Act.

All the events below are free and open to the public unless otherwise stated.

Venue: Nottingham City Museum and Gallery, Nottingham Castle
Further information: Wedgwood was a supporter of the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. He produced cameos that were distributed for free to supporters of the cause. Each of them was inscribed with, "Am I not a man and a brother?" You can see one of the items at the Nottingham Castle.

When We Ruled

Further information: Reknown African Historian and author of the book "When We Ruled", Mr Robin Walker will be giving a lecture at the University of Nottingham. He'll answer the key question in Black history: How much documented history is there beyond the Slave Trade, Mary Seacole, and Malcolm X? Robin presents a vast array of evidence that explodes the widely held view that Africans were without historical distinctions.

Life of George Africanus

Date: Thurs 22 – Mon 26 March
Venue: Council House
Further information: An exhibition celebrating the life of George Africanus, Nottingham's first black entrepreneur who came to England as a slave in the 19th century. On display will be original documents giving an account of George's life and photographs of documents and illustrations referring to his life in Wolverhampton and Nottingham.  A second exhibition will be on display at St Mary's Church in the Lace Market and will be available for loan to schools and other organisations. 

Commemoration and Celebration

Date: Saturday 24 March
Venue: Old Market Square
Time: 9.30am - 1.30pm
Further information: Nottingham Association of Black Churches present a commemoration and celebration through music, song and word. United Gospel Choir, Live Music, Dance group Qantum Matrix, Dynamic poetry, Kemet Radio, local artist and the magnificent 15 piece reggae band King Sounds from London. Special speeches will also include an address from the High Commissioner of Jamaica.

Slavery, Past, Present and Future

Further information: Nottingham Association of Black Churches conference and workshops reflecting on slavery, past, present and future. Family History Society Lecture

Further information: Family History Society lecture by Paul Cooks. Paul is a London-based author of 'Ancestors'. He has traced his own ancestors back to the Caribbean and to Africa.

Book of Reminiscences

Venue: Council House
Further information: Commemoration Book of Reminiscences of Black Community by Janet Brown of Black Renaissance, Nottingham. The book is being launched at the Council House, in the Council Chamber, by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham and invited guests.

Old Market Square events

Date: Sunday 25 March
Venue: Old Market Square
Time: 11.00am - 1.30pm
Further information: In the Old Market Square from 11.00am - 12.30pm live local talent performances include choirs, dance and poetry. Then the Nottingham Association of Black Churches lead a united open-air Service for the whole city in Old Market Square. The worship commemoration is led by the black community on behalf of all communities of Nottingham. Members from all communities are welcome to attend. The Lord Mayor of Nottingham will be present there will also be an address from High Commissioner of Jamaica.

George Africanus Memorial

Date: Sunday 25 March
Venue: St Mary's Church, Lace Market
Time: 3.00pm
Further information: Service at St Mary's Church, Lace Market. The Bishop of Jamaica Rt Rev Robert Thompson is the preacher and the service will end with the rededication of George Africanus' memorial. The George Africanus exhibition will be on display at St Mary's.

Study of Slavery

Date: Monday 26 March
Venue: University of Nottingham
Time: 10.00am – 12 noon
Further information: One-day conference by the Institute for the Study of Slavery (ISOS) at University of Nottingham.
