Short films on the big screen

The countdown to the opening of the revamped Old Market Square begins with the screening of some of Nottinghamshire's finest short films.

After all the delays, the new look Old Market Square is almost complete.

Plenty of launch events are planned but as a precursor a large screen has been erected in front of the Council House showing a series of short films that have graced the Bang! Film Festival in the past.

"We were asked to put some films together for the re-launch," says organiser Donna Bowyer.

"We're very proud to have some of the finest film-makers showing here. It's a really great environment to get out and see some films and not one we normally get in England."

What's on offer

There are 15 minutes worth of short films being screened until 10 February 2007. They include works by Simon Ellis, Simon Ralph, Miho Matsuma and the Forest Fields Youth Club.

"We had strict guidelines for this screening," says Donna.

"We're in a public place so films had to be universal for everybody which ruled out a lot of the films we get."

The future

Now the big screen has been used, the Bang! organisers are hoping they'll have the opportunity to show more short films in the summer.

Donna Bowyer says: "If the city council are up for doing more events like this we'll be there with a great selection of films."

Back indoors

Donna hopes the exposure to a new audience will inspire more film-makers to take part in the next Bang! Film Festival that's held at the end of March.

"Anybody out there who is making films - send them to the Broadway cinema. We're looking, in particular this time, for community based work."
