Introducing... Woody

Woody are on a quest to bring a slice of Americana to Nottinghamshire.

You could say that Woody have seen it all before. Two of the band, John Leonard and Paul Robinson, were members of the now defunct  'Seven Little Sisters'. John admits his time in the band, eventually, "got a bit bitter."

"The problem with Nottingham is that it's quite insular in its music scene. It's very cynical as well..."

Anthony Allcock

However, on the plus side, the time with Seven Little Sisters has led to new project, Woody - named after the band's key influence Woody Guthrie. John Leonard admits his previous experiences can only benefit his new band.

"We all made a lot of mistakes first time around... we all made errors of judgement."

As mentioned Woody are big fans of American folk musician Woody Guthrie, and although there's a British indie feel to their sound, the principle staple of the music is Americana.

But does the UK music market want Americana? Drummer Anthony Allcock believes it will do...

"What we bring to the Americana sound is not so much a knees-up, shin-dig, hoe-down, but a big band sound."

John admits Woody isn't all about fame, it's more about the music:

"It's not about trying to be popular. We're not nineteen anymore...

"One of the new tracks we're recording has got a Sparklehouse sound, it's a bit experimental and [we're] not being scared to go 'oh we've got to do fast songs [because] people have got to dance', it's kind of well.. if we like it, we'll play it, sod 'em!"

Despite the talent many Nottingham bands complain about Nottingham's music scene. Woody are no exception. Anthony explains:

"I think the problem with Nottingham is that it's quite insular in its music scene. It's very cynical as well... you spend all your time trying to break Nottingham and really where you need to be is down in London..."

But what's the future? Do they want to lose the 'unsigned' tag? John is cautious:

"Just because you're signed it doesn't mean you're going to do well."

Wise words for all up and coming talent.
