The Nottingham Arts Youth Theatre presented C S Lewis' 'The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe', directed here by Sue Spittal. Four children enter into the magical land of Narnia where they encountered both good and evil characters. Peter (Jamie Andrew), Susan (Lois Deeny), Edmund (James Parnham) and Lucy (Emer Pearson) interacted well together and Edmund certainly came across as being argumentative and difficult. They all had large amounts to learn and carried off their roles with panache. David Steggles made Aslan the Lion appear to be a gentle creature rather than the leader in fight for the freedom of Narnia. The Wolf (Megan Griffin) strutted around the stage obviously relishing her bullying role. Hayley Compton gave a strong performance as the White Witch. Her vitality, commanding voice and manner had the ability to send shivers down the spine. The imaginary country was depicted by using cold snowy backdrops when it was held in the power of the wicked witch and as good overcame bad these became sunny and spring like. The folk playing the trees and lamp-post did well to remain so still during their scenes. The costumes and head-dresses worn by the various creatures helped to define their personalities. The young people involved in the performance all showed potential to become good actors. A good production of a much loved story. 4/5 |
