MusicYou are in: Nottingham > Entertainment > Music > Unsigned : A Dog Called Limbo ![]() A Dog Called Limbo Unsigned : A Dog Called LimboNottingham band 'A Dog Called Limbo' are all turned on by loud and dirty songs. Gregg Murray from the band tells us more... What's the origin of the band name? The band name was created in such a way as not to have an origin. That way any mention of 'a dog called Limbo' relates to the band (or people who have dogs named limbo). We wanted an interesting band name that would evoke the imagination of our listeners. We didn't want to follow the trend of calling it something like 'The Spangles' or 'The Poppets' or something like that. Listening to your music I can't pinpoint a particular genre, do you prefer it that way? It's always good when other people say that. If we are asked the question 'what does your band sound like?' and we answer 'oh... like no one else man!' it sounds like a cliche. We do prefer it that way. It means that we have something of our own to offer and is ultimately what makes a band distinct from others. It comes from embracing our musical differences within the band. We all have very different tastes but also have common ground to work upon. We are all turned on by loud and dirty songs. Our demo was 'demo of the month' scoring 9/10 in September's Metal Hammer magazine. They described us as 'eccentric British speed stoner' and 'like an old western on fast forward' (don't know if that helps) but it's our proudest moment. Any disastrous gigs?We played Junktion 7 downstairs when it first opened and had the neighbours burst in and complain that we were too loud. Sorry to those people! If there was a musician dead or alive that you would insert into your line-up who would it be and why?The band could possibly be improved with Angus Young (ACDC) on guitar, Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) singing, Keith Moon (The Who) on drums and Kim Deal (The Pixies) on bass. This replaces the whole line-up, but what a great line up that would be!
What makes A Dog Called Limbo different from other Nottingham bands? The mistake many bands make is that they are fans of a certain band and try to mimic them, or sound like them, rather than just letting it flow naturally. What you end up with are tribute bands who do not look like the band they mimic, nor do they sing the songs that people would want to hear 'tributed'. So is Nottingham a good city for local music?Nottingham has some damn good venues where people have the opportunity to see popular mainstream bands. This does not produce good conditions for a fertile underground scene. Local bands have to compete with bands like Tool or Bullet for my Valentine. To get recognition in Nottingham you have to be very good. Support the underground! Have you witnessed or took part in any rock 'n' roll misbehaviour? What happened?Didn't see anything Sir. Nottingham band Sacramento are big fans of yours, are the feelings mutual?Yes we liked them so much we made one of them our drummer. Where we can see you play next in Nottinghamshire? At the time of writing we have two gigs lined up for Bam-Bam promotions both at the Rose of England on Mansfield Road. Both gigs will showcase a number of other bands and it will be £2 on entry.
