The Nottingham Forest striker David Johnson has been forced to retire from football, after failing to recover from the back injury which has seen him sidelined since last December. After consultations with doctors, the 30-year-old has decided to call time on his playing career. | "I couldn't twist and turn as well, I got knocked over and it took me about ten minutes to get back up." | | Former Forest striker, David Johnson |
Forest paid Ipswich Town £3.5m for Johnson in 2001, with the forward going on to score 50 goals in 167 appearances for the League One side. He began his career as a trainee at Manchester United before moving to Bury, Ipswich and then Forest. He also had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Sheffield United while on Forest's books. Of his decision to quit he says: "It was disappointing at the time but I was in so much pain. It's the right decision because I've got a life to lead after (football). "I couldn't twist and turn as well, I got knocked over and it took me about ten minutes to get back up." Johnson is now hoping to complete his coaching qualifications - with Forest's help. "I've started my coaching badges. I'm learning the other side of football. I didn't think I'd like it but it's really interesting. I'm really enjoying it." |
