Uncovering Nottinghamshire's ghosts

We speak to ghost expert Richard Felix about some of the county's famous haunted spots.

Richard Felix is well known to ghost enthusiasts for his participation in programmes like Most Haunted.

He's just published a book called The Ghost Tour of Britain - Nottinghamshire and he's convinced many of the tales have substance:

"Ghost stories have always been with us so in my opinion there must be something to them. There's no smoke without fire."

Many of the famous Nottinghamshire ghostly locations are mentioned in the book - The Trip to Jerusalem, castle, Mortimer's Hole, Gallows Hill off Nottingham's Mansfield Road, Newstead Abbey and RAF Newton.

"Nottinghamshire is such a juicy county for the supernatural. Ghosts and history go together - the county has both," says Richard.

A haunted Trip

As if to emphasise the point, strange things happened when BBC Radio Nottingham presenter Alan Clifford joined Richard on a visit to the Trip to Jerusalem.

The building allegedly has several spirit sections including the cursed galleon. A sailor left the ship with instructions it should never be cleaned or moved. In 1996 is was moved and within a fortnight the landlady of the Trip had had an accident.

But it was when the duo went into the pub's cellars that strange happenings occurred. Despite several attempts no recording could be made.

"It was just like the microphone had discarded every other word, like a Norman Collier comedy routine," says Alan.

When he tried to broadcast the interview it refused to play.

"It's happened to photographers when we've gone down into haunted cellars. Their batteries have completely drained, adds Richard. "Eight out of ten things can be explained. The other two can't."

Emotional recordings

During the conversation on BBC Radio Nottingham Richard Felix tries to explain unnatural phenomenon, such as places like RAF bases where visions of long dead pilots are often seen.

"One of my biggest theories (is where an environment can trap an emotional occurrence). It's known as the Stone Tape theory. It's where you can actually get recordings of tragic events that are recorded into the fabric of a building. It's not an entity but a recording."

He also suggests that spirits are there to be spoken to. If articles are being moved around your home he says it's best to talk to them.

"Tell them, 'This is our home not yours'. You'll be surprised the number of times it works."
