British Art Show 6

The British Art Show 6 runs from 22nd April - 25th June 2006 at venues throughout the city.

Sideshow is a free event bringing together more than 40 artists to show the best of contemporary art again at a series of venues across Nottingham. It runs from 21st April until 4th June.

More details on both events can be found by using the web links on the right hand of this page.

On 6th May 2006 at the Bromley House Library, Philllip Henderson will drop 360 table tennis balls down a spiral staircase.

The event will help to explore Phillip's interest in sound and how 'pulse becomes pitch as the balls bounce faster'.

"I'm not really interested in whether it's art or not..."
Phillip Henderson

The 'Balls: Divination' project is part of Sideshow, which is showcasing local artists alongside those taking part in the British Arts Show.

The big question most people will want to ask is, 'is it art?' Phillip says,

"I'm not really interested in whether it's art or not... when the balls have finished moving they will be arranged in a certain way, which in my mind, satisfies most people's criteria as to what art is.

"I think it's important for people to ask 'what is art' but at the same time it's important to encourage people to ask far more important questions such as 'who are we', 'where are we', what is happening', 'what are we doing?'

A previous project of Phillip's involved him descending a staircase inside a sleeping bag, he believes his body has a part to play in this new venture too,

"My body has been replaced in this work by a number of table tennis balls, which you could say represent planets, allowing the possibility that my body is made up of a cluster of tiny planets."

Between 30 to 40 people will be able to experience the event which will take less than a minute.
