Teenage abstinence

Chris, 18, from Daybrook, has taken the decision not to have sex before marriage.

Chris Shannon, from Daybrook, is 18 years old.

He's decided he's not going to have sex until he is married.

"I'm a fairly average teenager."

"I've been brought up in a Christian household so I suppose I have got most of my morals from my parents."

No sex

"The only way I could kind of live my Christian life fully and properly is to follow all the rules as closely and as well as possible... and part of that is not having sex before marriage."

"I have not taken the decision lightly."

"It does affect your whole life, especially at my age."

"It's already affected my life massively. I was in a relationship for two years and it just ended simply because she wasn't prepared to wait until after marriage to have sex."

Sex and society

"I think that teenagers are under immense pressure to go drinking and find someone to go and have sex with."

"Sex has been taken out of the context of a secure relationship or marriage and resold to teenagers as something really casual. That to me just seems kind of strange, that you should take something that should be a really special and abuse it in that way."

"All I've decided is not to do that."
