The sheer scale of the toilets in The Priory is something to make you stop and take stock. In fact it takes a few minutes to finally decide just where you are going to stand to pee. There are no fewer than eight urinals and they curve elegantly away from you around the tiled wall. Meanwhile, the four cubicles bear a resemblance to stables, with dark wood and plentiful capacity. | "I'm looking for a female to review Nottinghamshire's ladies loos. What was here before? It seems vastly incongruous that such an innocuous pub could have such a vast toilet. Who is expected to use it? I don't know how busy the place gets but I wouldn't like to be there on a night when people have to queue to use the facilities. There are problems, some of the maintenance is a little slack, but I imagine this may be due to the immensity of the practical issues involved in keeping such a huge space in the kind of style to which it must be accustomed. Perhaps it is best to think of this as you would an old theatre or art deco cinema, retaining its appeal in defiance of the passage of time.

For those amongst you who enjoy revelling in the glory of shiny white enamel (I don't expect it's a huge proportion), this is the place to go. It is a veritable warehouse of fittings, with basins, taps and tiles all converging in glorious harmony. I can't overstate my enthusiasm for this place. It isn't a chrome tribute to all that is sleek and trendy and it isn't a dive of a toilet with graffiti and grimy character. In fact this is superficially nothing more than a standard toilet, with white bowls and clean sinks. Nonetheless, as an experience it is a hidden gem of a room and it is worth coming in off the street to check out the size even if you've no intention of buying a drink. |
