| Profile : Huw Green | Huw Green lives in Nottingham and loves the burgeoning Drum and Bass scene as well as Selectadisc and the Broadway cinema. In addition to attending as many gigs as possible, he likes to keep an eye on the weird and wacky around the city. He enjoys windsurfing and goes to Rutland water to catch a breeze whenever there is enough time. When he grows up, Huw wants to be Donald Sutherland in M.A.S.H. |
The Kean's Head looks parochial and out of the way. It isn't really a student pub (i.e. it has plush fittings and beer on tap for more than £4 a pint) but it does cater to anyone wanting to hide from the mania of Nottingham's creeping nightlife. The toilets, unsurprisingly, form a continuation of this splendid, well formed living room home from home. To begin with, they are tiled. Not dirty old tiles from several years hence and not caked in crusty old mortar or cracked and chipped. | "I'm looking for a female to review Nottinghamshire's ladies loos. These tiles are the definition of spick and span; whatever that actually means. It seems to reflect a quietly confident cleanliness, well kept and nothing sinister and mean hidden in any murky corners. What I thought of was a bustling housekeeper, large friendly arms and intense pride in the maintenance of this most important of rooms. This is a good image to have. Not only does it imbue you with a sense of the personal, the idea that there is a level of care and interest and some sort of investment.

In addition to this punters are implicitly discouraged from making a mess or failing to clean up after themselves. The fear is that Mrs Weatherby (or whoever she may be) will appear bearing down on you, all knickerbockers and knotted hankies, and give you the sharp end of her tongue. It is this looming presence that I am sure keeps people compliant and this compliance is a fundamental aspect in the upkeep of a pleasant loo. Other bars take note; the way forward is not necessarily to work your staff to the bone over a steaming mop bucket. More effective by far is to love your loo and share that love around. It will change things for the better. |
