X-Factor - Opera style

It's not easy becoming Nottingham Young Musician of the Year. There's the Simon Cowell-style judging panel to contend with.

18-year-old Victoria Gray is a singer who's going places. She's just been crowned Nottingham Musician of the Year for 2005 and is already planning on a career as an opera singer.

It's a dream that began when she was just 8 and her primary school teacher spotted her talent.

She's currently a member of the world famous Mansfield based Cantamus choir although she might have to leave to pursue her ambition. Following her success in Nottingham she's applying to join music colleges around the country.

To be successful she'll have to audition before a panel of judges, something she's used to after her Musician of the Year success.

"It's those good butterflies that keep you going," says Victoria about preparing for the Nottingham event.

For 25 minutes she sang before an audience and judges. Her repertoire included songs sung in Italian, French, Spanish and German as well as English.

"To become famous isn't what I'm doing it for. I just love singing."

She was shocked to be declared the winner since a singer had never won the competition, the prize normally goes to an instrumentalist.

The victory has given her a massive boost of confidence but she says she's not after fame and fortune. "To become famous isn't what I'm doing it for. I just love singing. As long as I'm singing I'm happy."
