Youngsters were buzzing with anticipation amidst the Mod revolution that was vibrating through Nottingham. Life was wonderful when student, Sally saw Jed in the Kardoma café, wearing his red and black striped jacket, white 'Fred Perry' shirt, and 'Levi' jeans. Sally was disappointed though, as he seemed not to return her attention, as she stood amongst all the girls that always grouped around him. On Saturdays, while shopping in town, she often saw him, cruising about the city streets, dressed in his fur-trimmed parka, riding his impressive, yellow Lambretta; with chromed spotlights and mirrors that fanned like a peacock's tail. Jed worked as a storekeeper at Raleigh; where he would dream his time away longing for the weekend, when he'd be free, to do as he pleased. Money was always tight, after paying his board and lodgings. Some of his wages was usually spent maintaining his scooter but some money was always put aside to haunt the clubs, the 'Dungeon' or 'Beachcomber' where the 'in-crowd' frequented. Any money still left over was spent on Mod-clothes because he wanted to be seen wearing the latest fashions. Jed usually met his friends in the Kardoma café, on Saturday mornings, where they'd discuss the maintenance of their scooters, then plan the all important weekend's entertainment. Today, busy people scurried about on their weekly shopping expeditions. A pandemonium of scooter engines turned their heads, as a posse of parka clad, scooter-boys, weaved their flamboyant machines through the traffic. Their girlfriends riding pillion dressed in trendy colourful gear, laughed and shouted to each other. Bystanders stood in amazement as the scooter riders blasted their two-tone horns at Jed watching from the roadside. He punched the air with delight and yelled, "Where you off to then?" A couple of scooters broke rank and cruised up along side him. "We’re off to the coast!" shouted one of the riders. "S-k-e-g-g-y!" shouted his girl friend. "S-k-e-g-g-y!" "Why aren’t you coming, Jed?" asked another rider. "Can't!" he replied, "got to do some work on my scooter." The revving of noisy engines drowned his voice as his mates sped off through the traffic. Jed deep in thought thrust his hands into his coat pockets, as the street returned to normality. Jed now realised how much he liked Sally. On Monday, he left work early to meet her outside her college gates. She was surprised to see him waiting on his fabulous scooter, all her friends enviously crowded around them. He asked her to jump on the scooter and said that he would give her a lift home. She was so thrilled, and snuggled up close to him as he whisked her away. Jed arranged to take her out on the following Saturday night, their first date. He took her into the city and surprised her with a trip to the 'Dungeon Club'; it had a fabulous atmosphere. They had a terrific time dancing in the crowded basement of the club to 'The Who's' latest hit 'My Generation'. |
