Non-existent Nottinghamshire

The people of Nottinghamshire don't have one, an accent that is, according to people of London.

Us Nottinghamshire folk like to think we're unique, we like to think that we are as easily distinguishable as anywhere else in England.

I bet if we asked the people of England what best represents Nottinghamshire people would have strong opinions… Robin Hood, Brian Clough, Sherwood Forest, Nottingham Castle… the wonky 'N'?

But when it comes to our accent it's a different matter - we're not even on the map. According to the cockney wide boys and girls from the big smoke we're invisible.

We paid for an all expenses spared trip for one of our reporters, who just so happens to live in London (we are the BBC you know) to ask those from the capital to impersonate a Nottinghamshire accent.

If you were stopped in the street you'd be able to give a reasonable stab at an accent of those residing in the north, south, east or west of the country… but Nottinghamshire?

Apparently, our accent is "Sort of like a Leeds accent", maybe even "something like way-ee lads."

To be honest most people asked said "I wouldn't have a clue" how to do a Nottingham accent", "not really no," "Nah."
