What is 'User Generated Content'?

You may have noticed when using this website that many different names will be attributed to the large amount of articles we publish.

User information box

We will make sure you know who has written certain articles and whether they are employed by the BBC, in this box.

There are only three people who work for the BBC Nottingham website; they are Dan Sinclair, Nigel Bell and Neil Heath. All the other names, apart from various other BBC employees (e.g. Colin Fray, David Jackson etc), are written voluntarily by members of the public.

The material produced by the public is called ‘User Generated Content’ (UGC). UGC is something we actively encourage on this website. It’s your site at the end of the day so how apt that you should take an active roll in producing some of its content.

Our contributors when writing opinion pieces, such as theatre reviews, are expressing their own views and not necessarily that of the BBC.  We will endeavour to make sure you know whether a BBC member has written an article or not by way of the little box on the left of each page.

This will tell you what the person’s current situation is e.g. student and will give a few personal details like what they do in their spare time.

How to write

We love being sent articles, with digital pictures, of around 350 words about anything concerning issues, interests and people in Nottinghamshire.

The writing has to be of a decent standard in terms of public interest and grammar. It also has to be tasteful and not blatantly commercial.

It’s a fantastic way of having your written work published for all to see and though we cannot pay you it can provide opportunities for you. For example, one of our previous contributors used to do a regular column about the fortunes of Nottingham Forest – the experience of this helped him eventually get a job at the BBC working on one of its local sites like this one.

You have any questions about the above please leave your query below in the box…
