Nottingham at Night

Night-time and beauty

Words by Vicky Wiley
Student Vicky Wiley captures Nottingham at Night and the Beauty in Radford in a collection of photographs.

When I first came to Nottingham, I was taken aback by all of the beauty around me. Between the University campus, Wollaton Park and the city centre itself, there are so many beautiful aspects to this town.

Nottingham at Night

Nottingham seems to light up, both literally and figuratively, at night. I've chosen the night time as a subject for a number of reasons.

The darkness of the night tends to cloak most things from our view, yet it only takes a single street lamp or spot light to draw attention to one particular monument or detail on the road. I guess you could say that the obscurity allows us to notice the little things. The darkness opens up our eyes, in a sense, and directs our attention directly to things we may not have seen in broad daylight.

There is a real paradox when speaking about the night. On one hand it is the time when all is peaceful, everything quiet and still, everyone is safe and at home in bed... On the other hand because Nottingham is so full of students, it is in the night-time that it tends to liven up as well. It is a social time, and also - the perfect time for crime to take place. Passive, social, dangerous - which one is it? It is in this ambiguity that night-time is so fascinating. In this series of photographs, I have tried to capture this ambiguity in the darkness.

Beauty in Radford

Nottingham, and in particular, certain areas around it have a terrible reputation for having high crime rates and too much violence and drugs in the streets. It is undeniable - it seems every week we read in the newspaper about something terrible that has happened in Nottingham's boundaries. We should not turn a blind eye on these events, but we should also learn to see the beauty that Nottingham has to offer. I am a resident of Radford, and when I first moved here I was very sceptical about the neighbourhood. I quickly found that there is much beauty to be seen in even the most dubious of areas. The series of images here try to show Radford from my perspective.
