Jump around!

By Matt Kneale & Luke Callinan
Jumping, climbing and vaulting are part of the newest urban extreme sport in Notts. Find out more about Parkour.

Le Parkour is an urban extreme sport that is catching on quickly in British streets. Also known as Parkour, PK and Free Running, the sport started in France, and it comes from the word 'Parcour', or Obstacle Course.

Traceurs (participants in Parkour) feel more strongly about the Self-Discipline side of Parkour, yet Free Runners consider it more of a way to pass the time, in a fun way. Traceurs seem more able to use Parkour in their everyday lives, and can use it in everyday situations, whereas Free Runners tend to just go on runs with other people.

The great thing about Parkour is that all you need to participate is your body, your full concentration, common sense, and a half-decent pair of trainers. Although it is advised you read the ‘Fundamentals’ on the Urban Freeflow website before you go out, Parkour is ready to use by everyone.

"The great thing about Parkour is that all you need to participate is your body, your concentration, common sense, and a half-decent pair of trainers."

If you’re stuck for ideas on where to do Parkour, look around you, it’s everywhere. That little bollard at the end of the street, the railings in the park (not the sharp kind though!), everywhere. If you’re really stuck for ideas, try going around Nottingham, and just look around. Good places to start are the White Walls at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham Trent and Urine Nation in Broadmarsh.

Parkour philosophy

After doing Parkour for a while, you begin to notice and understand more about the philosophies behind it. Parkour is an expression of freedom and an art of movement. As you learn this, you start combining movements when doing Parkour, and make them almost literally, one movement. Also, you begin to get flow and smoothness into your Parkour training. You also learn about the importance of landing correctly and not making a noise as you participate.

Not everyone goes this deep of course. Some people just like it as an exercise, as something to do in spare time, and there is nothing wrong with this. It’s just that some people take Parkour more seriously than others. That is the difference between Free Runners and Traceurs.

If you’re still not sure on what to do, then it is advised you visit the Urban Freeflow website. Some consider this the home of English Parkour on the internet. They have step-to-step tutorials on all the fundamentals you need to learn before getting into Parkour.

Parkour, at the end of the day, is open to anyone and the most important thing, whether you take it seriously like the philosophy side or not, is to have a good time and enjoy it.

Click on the links in the top right of the page to see a Nottingham Parkour photo gallery and hear Luke Callinan from the Nottinghamshire group of Free Runners.

Remember: Parkour is a dangerous activity and top Free Runners or Traceurs have undertaken years of training. Beginners should meet up with a local group and start off from a sensible level. Be careful!

Once i knew about freerunning i knew it was going to be put across the wrong way and thts exactly whats going on. i completely agree with DaN on this! i havent rerally been keeping up with the media side and concentrate on my self!

Hyona
I have been freerunnign for 2 and a half years, the best way to begin to freerun is to teach urself, dnt always look for advice off of people who have been doing it for a long time, its self taught. When u have been doing freerunning aslong as i have the eye comes to analise good locartions, i garentee there are good places to go arounf YOUR area! Dont be intimadated by other people who can Flip ect start with your own thing, one of the most important things in freerun is balance, jumps u can be a very good freerunner withpout doing flips, trust me :) Hyona

unamed
Freerunnign (parkour) is to get from one place to another by travelling forward i ma seeing more and more groups coming up and thinking its all about fliping! its not atall, people are fogetting the big jumps! CATS, running precsions. many arts have been fogotten and moves like wall flip and wall spin are tyaking over! its not the way. uNaMed :/

Parkour is really good sport to be involved in lets you be more free in the way you move. it's a friendly atomosphere to be in with everyone. Also that link needs changing, as they have a new website which is www.parkournottingham.co.uk go check it out for your self.

Daniel Willcocks

Im a traceur from Aus who has been doing parkour for 1 year, I have gained knowledge over all the basics and learnt them well. Flips are just to add fun when your slowing down from being tired or thinking of somewhere to move next, they can be used to overcome things, but usually not very fluidly. When i travel around my neighbourhood, i try to be cat like, not when walking of course, but if i see a run, i invision myself as a cat when doing it...i also try not the do parkour in front of ppl to be noticed, but rather as a way of telling people its out there...I have inspired ppl in the local community and it makes you feel great, but most of all, parkour makes you feel great!

Benz
The best definition of parkour I have heard came from David Belle, and if you are really into parkour than you know who that is, and he basically says that parkour is the integration of movement into life that allows you to adapt to your surroundings so that nothing interferes with your movement. Whether you're a freerunner or a traceur, movement is important, so stay up and keep it in the flow.

henry s
how if you people who can play parkour verry well can take it to indonesia i really want learn this sport man its awesome

tdkjay
Parkour is about freedom of movement but now that Freestyle Parkour has been ''created'' and flips have been introduced the old way of parkour has been neglected a little. Parkour at the roots or purist Parkour is generally just Parkour as it should be. Its not restricting because you improve yourself in moving fluidly and efficiantly through the environment. Say if you wanted to get from a bench to a train station as fast as you could, would you really take time to precision jump on a wall and take 2 seconds to frontflip off of it when you could clear the obstacle much more fluidly and efficiantly just by speed vaulting it? It would be much quicker... all i want to say is dont discriminate purists for doing Parkour the old way just because you prefer flips and flair in your movements. peace out

oli
we should have a sort of parkour training course over the holidays from pro's

Marijus
I gues i'm one of the first Traceurs in my country :) i live in Lithuania :)

jack
hey im 13 and i am a free ruuner with all my m8s.we live in blackpool but there arent very many spots to free run but we find places.

Matt Kneale
Ok, a few things. 1. Dillon, its not about the publicity, I didnt write this just to get famous or anything, I did it to inform other Nottingham residents about the art, so they are more understanding. And I also did it to get more people into it. :) Ashdude, you dont sound like a very good traceur (or freerunner) for one reason, you use it to escape the police. You're missing the entire point, its about freedom of movement. And Freya, I was dead unfit before I started, but you just have to carry on until you prevail, and get used to the demanding physical side. You dont need a gym or a garden, just go to your Village/Town/City centre and practise! Brido, check out the UF Forums, theres a link at the side of this page. Same with you St3am. AJ, they'res a lot more to it than just doing flips :) And yeah moonie I completely agree.

Dillon Jepsen
You guys are so lucky i wana get the news lol i do parkour and i been doing it for 5 months now and i am in love for it i do it alot nonstop its the urge of being someone uncommon to landlovers lol i like it when i run and jump off my roof and roll and do the casual walk away i do backflips aeril flips frontflips without a care Parkour is designed in a very fluid and aggressive way just a thrill packed run.Nobody really dies in it unless, they jump off a 7 story building and swishes their arms around lol.

ashdude
lol iv been doin parkour 4 about 2 yrs now i saw it in france n it looked kwl and now im quite good so i just use t everyday n it comins i handy wen u get chased by da police!!!! dey crnt vault cover a rail 2 a 8ft drop very easly aparntly lol peace out dudes keep up da gd wrkn its is mre about vaults not flips people

freya
help me! im unfit and i cant even do a handstand yet, but i want to do parkour more than anything. whats a good way to start? (i dont have a parkour gym or a garden or anything!)

Brido (largs scotland)
anyone pk around dis area i.e glasgow

St3am
I do alot of pk but find it hard to track down other traceurs.

aj_
i also do free running i am really intrested in it and amazed when i see people showing there talent, i can also my self do forward sumies and back wards is really an amazing sport

moonie
if parkour is freedom of movement, these so called 'pk purists' cannot be as hypocritical as to restrict how other people move, be it through flips or tricks.

Matt Kneale
I advise that you try getting into town, its much better than clifton. Matt Kneale

Jordan Wray-coward
im into le parkour but clifton doesn't have many good places to practice it at all and were there are good places we arent aloud and get banned from

Matt Kneale
Well said Tom, couldnt of put it better myself. Matt

Tom
Karl, look outside the window, there's your Parkour gym.

karl morgan
can any1 tell me were theres a pk gym in west mids

Matt Kneale
Glad you liked it Tom. And Kamal, you dont need one :P Just go on the Urban Freeflow forum, go to Local Action and find the Leicester thread. Matt

kamal
we need a parkour center in leicester

Tom
Great article, it shows that Parkour isn't just about doing small jumps and stuff, it's a different way of walking, do what you want, I love the flips, they really show a sense of freedom. Anyway, now I'm off to do some Parkour!

Matt Kneale
Man its easy really :) I recommend you read the Fundamentals on the Urban Freeflow website (http://www.urbanfreeflow.com/fundamentals/fundamentals.htm) and also I recommend joining the local Notts PK forum, the link can be found just above this comment thing. :) Hope to hear how you're doing when you start. Matt

Luke
it's not bad with flips, it's just we just include flips into our way of parkour,we all still have very good parkour skills.

max (notts)
how do i get into pk??

Matt Kneale
I didn't write the first bit about jumping between buildings, the BBC added that. It is now changed. More pics will be added to the gallery soon, hopefully more vaults etc. and less flips. Matt

dave (liverpool)
the way they have explained parkour is bad parkour is a filosiphy not a leaping from building to buildings

Fart
Yo everyone!!! first one to say sumet :D n e ways yeh i been doing parkour for bouth 4 months now its great way to keep fit, have fun and adapt to ur surroundings more love it!

Dan
A lot of those pics in the gallery are tricking and not parkour. You are giving the wrong impression by having pics of ppl doing backflips etc...

Matt Kneale
Glad to see you got it up. Thank You.
