Tony Hadley and Martin Fry

80's icons team up for new tour

Alex Walker
Pop veterans Tony Hadley and Martin Fry will once again be pulling in the crowds, young and old, when their new tour comes to Nottingham in March. Lucy Tegg caught up with the former frontmen as they discussed being an 80’s icon, 25 years on.

Hadley & Fry facts

  • Tony Hadley was lead singer with New Romantics Spandau Ballet from 1978 to 1990 and went on to have a successful solo career.
  • Martin Fry has been frontman of pop pioneers ABC since 1982. The band  supported Robbie Williams on his 2001 tour.
  • On their joint tour, Hadley and Fry will be supported by two bands and a large brass section.

Tony Hadley and Martin Fry are used to breaking hearts as the lead singers of Spandau Ballet and ABC respectively, but now they’ve teamed up to tour the country in front of a new generation of fans.

The tour reaches Nottingham on Wednesday, 30th March when they play Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall in what Martin promises is “gonna be a hell of a show”.

With a combined back catalogue including Spandau Ballet classics such as True and Gold, and ABC hits Look of Love and When Smokey Sings, it promises to be a night full of nostalgia.

But that will not mean the audience will consist only of mums – the duo hope to attract some of the daughters too. As they tell Lucy, 80’s music is experiencing a rival among the younger generation and they are looking forward to bringing their music to a new audience.

Unlike many 80’s bands who have recently returned to the scene, Hadley and Fry know what the public wants and will ensure the setlist is packed with favourites. “It’s a pleasure playing your big hit records,” says Martin, “and it’s a real joy to see the audience.”

Touring with two bands, the pair will hit an incredible 61 venues around the country, including, Tony claims, “Aunty Mable’s front room too”.

But the tour is not as rock ‘n’ roll as it may sound, with former heartthrobs Martin Fry preferring tea and biscuits on the bus and Tony Hadley revealing he is now a keen gardener.

Martin says he is looking forward to playing the Nottingham leg of the tour having not played in the city for quite a while, although his first band, Visa Versa, played in Nottingham regularly.

Tickets for the Nottingham show are on sale now, priced between £18.50 and £22.50, from the Royal Concert Hall Box Office: 0115 989 5555 or www.royalcentre-nottingham.co.uk.
