Rather like Moulin Rouge that was on the telly the other week "Produced By Trevor Horn" is an album you’ll either love with a passion or hate vehemently. If you’re a fan of the stripped back, one take, minimalist approach you’d be advised to avoid this. Trevor Horn does not do anything by halves; if the kitchen sink is available he’ll throw it into the mix. But if layered production is your thing then look past the potentially naff acts and take a lesson from the master. Horn’s heyday was the 80’s. His brief flirtation with appearing on Top of the Pops was limited to the Buggles. Video Killed the Radio Star (the first song aired on MTV) kicks things off. After briefly becoming the new Jon Anderson in Yes, Horn retired to desk work. This was the age of the 12” single and with Art of Noise and Frankie, Horn’s reputation was made. They all appear on this 2 disc set along with Pet Shop Boys, Seal and Godley and Crème. He even makes Dollar sound cool. The Horn sound might be a little dated in this day and age but he’s still weaving his magic in 2004 – his latest work with Lisa Stansfield is represented here and proves he still has much to offer. i-Pod: Slave to the Rhythm (Grace Jones) Label: ZTT Rating: 4.5/5
