Richard Whitehead

Marathon Man - Richard Whitehead

Forget Paula Radcliffe - here's a runner with real guts who's taking on the challenge of the Big Apple.

Richard's achievements

He's captain of Nottinghamshire's disabled cricket team and has been chosen to represent England.

He plays sledge hockey for Great Britain.

He's preparing for the next Paralympics.

There's no doubt that all eyes will be on Paula Radcliffe when she runs the 2004 New York marathon (on Sunday 7th November). After all, she's being paid enough and it his her first competitive outing since her disastrous Olympics.

But arm chair fans would do a lot worse than look out for Richard Whitehead from Colwick, Nottinghamshire.

If you're talking about pressure Paula's got it easy compared to Richard.

The 28-year-old swimming teacher was born with no legs below the knees. When he tackles the 26 plus miles he'll be doing so without the aid of his prosthetic legs. Instead he'll wear specially-cushioned shoes fitted where his prosthetic limbs are normally attached.

"My disability is more visual when my legs are off and I want to show that disabled people can play sport."
Richard Whitehead

Richard hopes to raise awareness of disability and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research.

This will be his first marathon.

He's been talking from New York to BBC Radio Nottingham's Karl Cooper. During the interview he talks about :-

  • The New York weather
  • How he can run with his disability
  • He's a healthy guy
  • Specialist running equipment
  • All in a good cause
  • The route

We wish Richard Whitehead all the best for the New York marathon.
