John Denver album cover

John Denver - A Songs Best Friend

Holly Miles
Don't laugh - he sold millions of albums over the years and this will only add to the tally.

What:

A collection of the country stars greatest hits.

He only had one?:

Maybe in the UK he’s only know for Annie’s Song but in the States he was a mega star and wrote hits for a host of artists.

Verdict:

It’s thirty years since Annie’s Song was a worldwide smash and everytime I hear it it still sounds like someone’s turning off a vacuum cleaner half-way through. Denver’s image was squeaky clean – he was like a grown up Milky Bar kid – big glasses, blond hair. But he could pen a tune. Leaving On A Jet Plane, Take Me Home Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High were all his. All told he sold 60 million albums before dying in a plane crash aged 53. Twenty of his best are gathered here together with a bonus disc including demo versions and an acoustic rendition of Annie’s Song. Look a little deeper and you’ll find tracks that reflected his passion for the planet and environment. The Eagle and the Hawk and Calypso. Simple sentiments, simple tunes but often that’s the most effective way.

Have Your Say

I have only just listened to John Denvers songs having bought the unplugged album a couple of months ago. I am amazed that I managed to miss so many great songs that were written 30 years ago. His voice and writing talent were popular all over the world and considering I have just discovered his music he is without doubt a song writing legend.

I've been listening to John Denver for 30 years and still consider him to be one of the best vocalist ever. But unfortunately he does not get enough airplay as some other less talented artists so please lets have the occassional denver song to keep us Denver fans happy.
