Newstead Abbey
FACTS
Newstead Abbey...
Was originally an Augustinian priory founded by Henry II in about 1170.

In 1540 Henry VIII granted Newstead to the poet's ancestor, Sir John Byron.

Newstead Abbey retains its medieval character.

The most famous survival is the west front of the church, which dates from the late 13th century.

Originally the south transept of the Priory Church, the Orangery got its name from the Byron family, who purchased the Newstead estate from Henry VIII in 1540, and converted the transept into a room for growing citrus fruits.

The Orangery's ornate plaster ceiling, crystal chandelier and large windows with beautiful garden views beyond make the Orangery a different wedding venue.
