FACTS
In a recent survey, 85% of chippies said they nearly always used fresh British potatoes.

Maris Piper is the chip shops’ favourite potato variety, used by 98% of chip shops, and the vast majority are prepared to pay the price for top quality potatoes.

The UK’s 8,500 fish and chip shops sell over 277million portions a year with a total annual retail sales value of £700million.

Fresh and frozen chips are free from the artificial preservatives and colourings found in many other fast foods.

In the 18th Century, the French served the first ‘pommes frites’ - fried potatoes that have come to be called chips.

The first reference to chips in Britain is thought to be from the nineteenth century: In 1854 a leading British chef mentioned thin cut potatoes in oil in his recipe book, Shilling Cookery.

During the Second World War Frederick Lord Woolton, Minister of Food, declared fish & chips were the only food not to be rationed.

Raymond has been running the Fish Bar in Daybrook for the last ten years.

It's a real family affair as he works alongside both his wife Helen and daughter Melissa.

On winning the award Melissa says: "We're all a bit shocked. It's a nice feeling. We didn't even know we'd been nominated for the award."

Raymond's been in the business a long time. His first chippy was in Derby, then he owned one in Ripley. However, he loves serving the people of Daybrook: "The customers are really nice."
