Save our trees? |

It's eight months since protesters first took to
the trees on land off Debdale Lane in Mansfield Woodhouse. They've
set up camp in an effort to prevent an access road from being built.
Take a look at their camp that includes
tree houses, huts, tents and even tunnels underground.
What's the story...
Developers Bellway Homes want to chop the 40 trees down to make
way for a new road junction.

- the protesters camp |
The junction will serve a housing development on
the old Sherwood Colliery site.
Protesters say the trees, which include a 300-year-old beech should
be protected. They say it's on public land. They've set-up camp
on the site in Mansfield Woodhouse.
Councillors had originally agreed for the tree to come down, when
they gave planning permission to Bellway for the road junction.
The protesters called on council to revoke their decision. So the
council asked for consultants reports.
Councillors then considered two reports by independent consultants.
One said that decay in the tree posed a risk to public safety, so
it should be felled. The other report concluded that no alternative
road junction could be made, so, again, the tree should come down.
But it may not be the end of the matter, as the authority is also
facing a challenge in the courts. Mary Parkin, a local resident,
is taking the planning issue to judicial review...
