Students from several York schools joined council and union representatives outside the Mansion House in York to protest against the outbreak of war in Iraq.

Pupils from Millthorpe school said they were demonstrating because they believe war is wrong.

"We believe Saddam Hussein is a dictator and we'd like to see him removed from power but war isn't fair on the people."

"War will kill innocent civilians."

"I don't think the Iraqi people are really aware of the situation and why they're getting bombed."

"There are other ways to deal with dictators like Saddam Hussein without going to war against his entire country and killing innocent civilians.

How would you respond to accusations that this is just an excuse for a day off school?

"We're not just here for a day off school. The more supporters the better. It makes a bigger statement."

Some people have said that children don't understand the issues and shouldn't get involved

"They don't listen to children but if there's loads of us then they might."

"If didn't know what we were talking about we wouldn't be here."

"This is a good cause, it's what I believe in and I fully understand the issues. I think it's good that young people are getting involved. Everyone's got a voice and it should be heard. If it's what you believe in then people need to know about it."
