The
York Handmade Brick Company first started life way back in the 1930s
and is now based at Alne near Easingwold.

Dougie gets his hands dirty |
The
company has seen many changes throughout its career, including the
recent introduction of a hi-tech computer controlled kiln costing
£300,000.
Traditionally
villages in the Vale of York (and indeed York itself) have mainly
been built with local handmade bricks.
But
Dougie was keen to stop theorising and get his hands dirty. He wanted
to find out how the handmade bricks were produced.
Brickmaker
Mark Todd put Dougie through his paces, dressing him in a rubber
pinny and green rubber gloves, and getting down to business with
a huge pile of black sticky clay.

Dougie being shown the ropes |
We
are not sure if any house built with Dougie Bricks would stand the
test of time....
However
managing director David Armitage himself practises what he preaches.
His own house, near York, has been constructed entirely of York
Handmade bricks!
