Election 2005

Castle Howard
Castle Howard

Constituency profiles: Ryedale

Ryedale covers a large area and is seen as a fairly safe Conservative seat. We've asked each candidate to tell us what they'll do for the constituency if elected.

Results
In Ryedale it was business as usual with John Greenway re-elected as Conservative MP, doubling his majority. The surprise of the night was the performance of Labour's Paul Blanchard who managed the party's best ever result in Ryedale. Not such good news for the Lib dems who saw their support slump by more than 5,000 votes compared to 2001.

Stephen Feaster - UKIP

Born at Cropton in 1947, the son of a farmer, I ran my own TV Rental Business for 30 years in the Ryedale area and now help my wife Ruth with our B&B and Holiday Cottage businesses. Playing sport, especially cricket, has always been a big part of my life.

I passionately believe that it is wrong for Conservative & Labour governments supported by the Liberal Democrats to have signed away our rights and freedoms that millions fought and died for. Control over our everyday lives, form filling, means testing is increasing at an alarming rate and I vow to do everything I can to stop it.

  Stephen Feaster

John Clark - Liberal

John Grew up on the family farm in Cropton. A small farm couldn't support an income for two so he left and went south. He spent four years on Berkshire County Council, part of that time as chair of youth and community service, before returning to the family farm in 1990.

John was elected to Ryedale district council in 2003 and Led the campaign that resulted in Ryedale being a GM free council.

He is also Northern representative of the small farms association.

About the Ryedale constituency

Like neighbouring Richmond and the Vale of York, Ryedale is a huge and picturesque North Yorkshire constituency which is naturally Conservative.

It stretches from the boundaries of York, across the North York Moors, past Malton and Pickering, for almost 40 miles to the east, North Sea coast at Filey.

In 1986, its natural order was momentarily overturned when, following the death of sitting Tory MP, John Spence, the Liberals' Elizabeth Shields overturned a 16,000 majority to win by 5,000 votes.

This was, however, her 15 minutes of fame as the Conservatives regained Ryedale in the 1987 General Election by more than 10,000 votes. The victor John Greenway has been there ever since, though his majority has reduced to 4,875 by 2001.

This constituency is more than 99% white, with almost 50% of the population aged 45 or over. Unemployment is low and 20% of the workforce are either part-time or self-employed, with 15% working mainly at home. Three-quarters are owner-occupiers and there is almost no (1.9%) council rented sector.

Industry is mainly based on agriculture and tourism. Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are in the constituency as is a thoroughbred racehorse training centre at Malton. Also here is the famous Catholic public school, Ampleforth. A sizeable number of commuters travel to nearby York.
