What is binge drinking?
Anna enjoying a pint
Anna - 2 more of those and she's on a session!

"Binge drinkers are those people who fall about in the street, vomiting waiting for taxis. I'm definitely not a binge drinker," says Anna.

However, according to our findings she most certainly IS a binge drinker!

We've all heard of the binge drinking phenomenon, those people who make a mess of city centres, vomiting, causing damage and fighting. That's go nothing to do with the rest of us, who merely enjoy a drink and get a little lairy?

If that's your opinion, it could come as a bit of a surprise to discover that to qualify as a binge drinker, you'd have to drink three pints of Stella (if you're a bloke) or two large glasses of wine (if you're a lady) in a sitting.

» Quiz: How well do you know your drink?

Although the Department of Health have not issued a concrete definition of what constitutes a binge drinking session, it has become widely accepted that binge drinking involves a man consuming more than eight, and a woman more than six units of alcohol in one drinking session.

With premium lagers weighing in at as much as 2.8 units and a large glass of wine as 3.23, you can see how drink sizes have made binge drinking far more likely.

Is Anna a binge drinker?
Anna is 22 and lives in York. She works in an office and freely admits that she enjoys a drink.

"I like drinking socially, it helps me relax and have a laugh with my mates. It's not as though I'd touch drugs, so I figure that having the odd drink or two is a safe way for me to unwind."

Anna does not identify herself as a binge drinker, but as you can see from her drink diary, she regularly consumes more than double six alcohol units in a single drinking session.

Drink diary:

Day Drinks Units
Monday Stayed in, just had a few glasses of wine - recovering from the weekend!
4
Tuesday Went to the gym - didn't touch a drop!
0
Wednesday Went to the gym again, not a sausage!
0
Thursday Ooops! Went out for food straight from work with work mates, had: 1 pint (Stella), 1 dbl vodka & coke and about 3 glasses of wine
12.8
Friday Girly night out, so wine before we went out, about 4 dbl vodkas and 1 pint (Stella - I think!)
14.8
Saturday Watched the footy but stuck to halves, about 3 halves of Stella. Then about half a bottle of wine during meal with boyfriend
8.2
Sunday Stuck to OJ and lemonade!
0
Weekly total:
39.8

(To calculate this, we counted a pint of Stella as 2.8 units, we were generous and imagined that Anna's glasses of wine were 175ml and not 250ml measures, so a glass of wine was counted as two units.)

Total weekly units in one night!
Anna was shocked to discover that she was actually drinking almost three times the recommended weekly number of alcohol units.

"Is that right? I know I went out three times last week, but I didn't feel as if I'd overdone it. I definitely wouldn't have classed myself as a binge drinker..."

Doctors recommend that men and women should not consume more than 21 and 14 units of alcohol a week, respectively. On Friday night alone Anna managed to consume her weekly maximum!

Binge drinking and your health
So like Anna, you've realised your drinking habits qualify you as a binge drinker. What's the problem?

Alcohol in moderation has been proven to help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. However, research has shown that binge drinking can lead to an increased risk of a whole host of health problems, including high blood pressure, mouth and breast cancer and liver disease. » Find out more

kayleigh, at 14, i dont suggest you drink, wait till your at the legal age, as under supervision, you are less likely to go overboard, if your freinds try to force you, they arent really your freinds, they are bullies, dont let it get you down kayleigh!

Sera
it's funny how the definition of binge changes. there is no standard definition to it. initially 4 / 5 drinks for women / men is binge, now it's more than 2 drinks and it's a binge. How about those who consume 2 drinks in 30 seconds? I don't understand why a number is attached to the term binge? I believe binge is a behaviour, not determined by a number of drinks. "binge' has been exaggerated and the new definition is a result of moral panic.

Alcohol in pubs is cheaper than buying soft drinks. If you ask for water you get frowned at or made to buy mineral water at £1 per bottle. Rip!

Katy
Alcohol is ruining my life in every way. It used to enable me to laugh and feel sexy and forget all the bad. But now my life reminds me of the scene in The Little Prince, when he asks the drunkard why he drinks, and the drunkard replies in order to forget. And the little prince asks the drunkard what he wants to forget by drinking, and the drunkard replys, to forget that he drinks.I cannot control what I eat when I drink either. Not everyone is like me, obviously. I am of the opinion that if you are unhappy in any way, and often alone in the evenings, you should try to avoid alcohol because it will increase depression and a sense of urgency and neediness.I am not lecturing. This is just what I feel.

matty
i started drinking every friday when i was 12 i haveaaverage of 17 units a weekend but i regret it in themorning but all my mates do it so ido it isnt that bad for you

Curtis Johnson
yeah i love a good drink!!!!!!!!! i go out every friday night with my mates and then we make weird videos of when we are drunk. it is so much fun. then i knock myself out by walking into a lampost. crazy times! keep binge drinking everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kayleigh

no name
i am a forty six year old alcoholic.it has been almost 8 months since i have drank.after reading all of the comments i can relate to all of them, some i find extremely sad and ignorant.ie george best comments,if anyone could feel the true illness that drink does to you for one hour only, you would never drink again.

Becky
when i was just 14 i started to drink every weekend with my mates but then it turned into sum weekdays to! at this point i just fort i was doing what other teenagers do and i had so much fun! but now at 18 i realised how stupid i was drinking as now i have to have a drink at least 3 times a week! ive had councilling and getting over my alcohol problem! please dont follow what ur friends are doing just be yourself and wait till ur at a decent age and dont drink to much

Anna
I think it all depends on our upbringing too. My dad was an alcoholic and my mum let me see him drunk, it wasn't funny seeing him fall over, etc, she told me of the dangers and I can take it or leave it but always in moderation. My grandparents, bought my dad up to do what he liked and they encouraged him to drink when they went out - his sister is an alcoholic too. If you let kids try it but also educate them of the risks and why its not attractive to fall over and vomit because of it, it would perhaps reduce the amount of binge drinkers. Not abolish but educate more, even in school.

john
if you can drink 8 pints and not get a hangover then good luck-drink lots of water after your binge.

Lucinda
This country has a problem with binge drinking. It’s true – where else can you go out on a Friday night and see people throwing up in the street, openly swearing at strangers and not being able to physically walk without collapsing? It’s unacceptable and makes it seem pretty bad compared to other countries. The government spends billions on the problem but won’t do any real action – they make too much money off of booze taxes. It’s all a matter of saying no. And here is some motivation – you will have clearer skin, a healthy liver and you’ll probably save a lot of money switching from alcohol to water, orange juice or coke. So stop drinking to excess – enjoying alcohol for its taste, not for it’s effects!

Eric
Drink makes millions happy every year and it does wonders for the economy, just look at the stats about when the world cup's on. Abolishing advertising would not make drinkers drink less, it didn't for smoking. Drink rules.

adrian
why do we need to drink to be honest it just makes you more depressed in the long run i say dont do it you can have a good time doing anything why drink theres no point

Taylor
i am against binge drinking, it is bad. we shuld all binge eat instead

jo
go out with your mates and enjoy yourself, stuff what any1 else says its your like and like isukathis says as long as you look after yourself aswell it is fine to drink and socialise fast food ect can be alot worse for ppl that booze

gem
if it makes u happy keep it going

kerry
dont binge drink it destoyed my mums life

adam
i'm 20, go out most weekends, often dont drink. when i do go out i plan to have a good night, so what if i "binge drink"from time to time, who doesnt "binge"? what about that burger last week or that pizza, sure that helped you keep within ur reccomended daily amount of calories/fat/salt. When i go out and drink i have about 8-10 alcopops a few shots a couple of cocktails and the odd mixer, i enjoy myself and i don't feel anyone out there has the authority to tell me otherwise. The majority of people out there have no doubt gone out and got a little drunk and enjoyed themselves. I enjoy myself alot more when i have had a drink on a night out and if thats called "binge drinking" then so be it. I still play football on a regular basis and go to the gym amongst other activities to keep myself fit, its not like we all go out every nioght and dont do anything to ensure we are healthy. its the quality of life not the quantity, i would much rather die at the age of 70 knowing i have enjoyed myself as much as i could than be sat here at the age of 120 looking back and wishing. This is of course just my own personal oppinion but i know where i will be on friday and it wont be at home watching some second rate comedy.

Jamal van johnson
I say binge drinking is ok because everyone has to enjoy them selves once in a while but if your doing it on a reguler acation then thats just wrong

Danielle
Drinking rules!!!! Me and my bezzie mates go out practically every weekend not necesarily to get drunk but HOW MUCH FUN IS IT???? how many of you have brought home a trffic cone? or have got so drunk you weed yourself laughing? its what being young is all abouit!! i came on here for research but i really cant understand why people slag off those who like to drink???!!! fair enough if it gets to the point where your drinking everyday, but if you dont like it SO WHAT??? dont force others to be paranoid and boring just like you!!! if you want to drink go ahead- were all going to die eventually!!! George best i salute you at least you enjoyed yourself while it lasted, your memorys will be with you forever!! xxxxxx

Gavin
If your enjoying yourself keep doing it

sam
who needs a drink to have a good time

Dimel
It is fun to drink quys but most of the times we overdone it. So we just have to cool down a little bit. When we go out with friends we do not have to drink as much as we usually do. Sometimes is also fun to look at all the others in our company being to tally drunk and be the only one sobber. Try it, you will see it works out and the next night you out you will have a lot of funny stories to tell to the rest of your company about their accomplishments. So, you will cheer up all of them, without your regular drink (to rise your mood). Good luck

ryan
basically if you want to drink then drink. If you dont want to drink dont drink. Dont comment on what others do just do what you want to do and leave others to themselves. Im irish so as you can imagine i enjoy having a few guinesses . Thats what i like to do

Kate
Im sorry but this is all way out of hand now. The media has latched onto the idea of binge drinking and has managed to esculate it into a moral panic. Binge drinking, as it were, has not only just began, people have been doing it for years and years. It annoys me because I consider myself to be 'normal' and I go out on a friday night like most people my age. I'm not any different, I like a drink, I get drunk, so what? As long as I'm not abusive or causing trouble then I don't see why I should be made to feel like a lower form of human life. Get over it.

Michelle
so what if she enjoys a drink we all do. and in reply to daves comment you're not a sheep if you drink and im interested to know if you drink yourself. i work in a pub and know the occasional drink helps you relax people although i do not agree with using it as an escape.having fun and drinking is not a crime unless you're under 18. Happy Drinking!!!! i know i will this friday.

grumpus
Had to smile when Anna said this: "It's not as though I'd touch drugs". Newsflash - alcohol is a drug! Granted a soft, readily available and nicely taxable drug, but a drug nonetheless.

you sad people - just think...
get a grip - drink in moderation of a 'relaxing' few drinks over a few hours and don't do it more than 2-3 times per week. course it's binge drinking - unless you're an alcoholic who drinks "all the time" then most of us 'binge' on food and drink - think about it, do you eat one or two pringles or half a carton??!!

Mark
You only live once so enjoy yourself

Mike
Sharon, you don't have to drink Alcohol when you see your friends. It's not the booze that makes it socialable, it's the company your with. Why not try drinking something "softer" and don't let them put pressure on you to over do the Alcohol.

isukathis
Rubbish! I've been "binge drinking" since I was 16, I'm now 40, run every other day and quite healthy. keep fit and stay away from the fast food and you'll be alright!

dave
sharon you dont have to drink alcohol when you go out or are you a sheep

André Luiz - Brazil
If that makes her feel free and also keeps her busy, I mean, keep her not thinking about the day after, that should be fine.

Adam
Is there any truth in the idea I've heard that alcohol affects you more if you drink through a straw? Or mix drinks? Would that change your unit count or not?

Steve/York
Nowadays I probably average about 1 to 2 pub visit per week Of 4-6 pints over the course of a year.Maybe a couple of bottles of beer at home and the odd glass of wine per week. As you get older quality is definitely better than quantity so I prefer a good beer as opposed to too much.

Jack Daniels
Got to admit, I've drank up to 4 times my weekly allowance of units in one night out. The most I'ver ever had is a shocking full bottle of Bailey's, 8 cans of bitter, 4 alcopops and 10 vodka and cokes. I guess my liver is dead.

Sam
You don't have to drink alcohol when you go out!

Sharon
Shocking! I go out about as much as Anna but didnt realise how much that adds up to. But cutting back would mean not seeing my mates as much... so what should I do.
